Hands on with Final Cut Studio’s Color

“Color” is Apple’s newest addition to the Final Cut Studio club. Like a cheerleader at a comic convention, most of the editors I know that have upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 have taken one look at Color and run the other way. I had a chance to attend a brief hands-on session covering Apple’s new finishing system, which brings Final Cut Studio that much closer to being a full broadcast production studio in a box.The first thing you’ll notice is that Color definitely doesn’t feel like a Mac application (despite the fact that it always has been). Apple has done a lot of work to clean up FinalTouch (the basis for Color that Apple acquired when it bought Silicon Color lock stock and barrel), but there are still plenty of rough edges visually. Those rough edges become even more more apparent if you try to use Color on a laptop. Apple isn’t kidding around when it recommends two 1920×1200 displays—Color will happily suck up every inch and more. But hey, at least you can validate that 30″ Cinema Display now, right?
